If it were a library doing this, I'd think it was for the greater good. The physical copies cannot last forever. The only problem I see with this is that it's Amazon doing it, which no doubt means if they make it accessible, it'll only be behind online DRM. That's what makes it a preservation problem, not the involvement of AI or the destruction of physical property.
