The pioneers pre-IBM PC takeover were almost all using X servers, particularly multi-user mainframes.

    @bonkmaykr @phnt @maid @mangeurdenuage @dps910 @newt Most of the companies tried other shit like NeWS and later went with the flow.

    One didn't.

      @sendpaws @bonkmaykr @maid @mangeurdenuage @dps910 @newt Yeah, and also proceeded to build one of the slowest machines imaginable based on one of the slowest kernels of the time and only made it work by rewriting 99% of it from scratch.

      pre-OS X MacOS was also attrocious.

        @sendpaws @bonkmaykr @dps910 @maid @mangeurdenuage @newt Oh, also build with ancient gcc, which produced code slow as molasses.

          @phnt @bonkmaykr @maid @mangeurdenuage @dps910 @newt yeah Steve Jobs was methed up deciding to make a 68k UNIX workstation when everyone else had moved on by then. I've had little interest in buying one but mostly because the weird cult around them, but also as much as I want one I can emulate it.

          Mac OS Classic had a different problem: it was trying to make a single app OS multitasking. Before MultiFinder, Mac OS was single tasking and literally opening up an app closed out the finder and took up the whole screen. Every reason it's jank can be explained by that.

            i've owned NeXT systems and gave/sold them away because there's no fun at all to be had with them. the hardware looks nice but is aggressively clunky. seeing that osx was always dogshit slow and that it wasn't the hardware's fault was an eye-opener. all i could find to play was the worst port of doom i have ever seen. the demoscene doesn't want to touch it when they all have amigas with the same cpus and better graphics right there, even for the cred.

            i think they cracked daydream by now so maybe they can at least function as clunkier macs.

            granted i had them back during the nekochan dark ages so whatever state the NeXT community is in now, back then at least it wasn't based around telling people who fished machines out of the trash and needed software to fuck off. i'd probably have a better sgi today if it wasn't for those assholes, rip in piss

              @WALFTEAM yeah same on the SGI front, at least I have an Octane 1.5 (it can take the V6/8 GPUs) and it has an ESSI with no textures.

              NeXT's community isn't so bad and black hole is still around, at least not compared to the warzone of the SGI scene.

                seeing os9 run circles around osx on the same hardware was a formative lesson in enshittification that everyone ignored because of the reality distortion field. now jobs is dead and that field long gone, but it's too late.

                  @phnt@fluffytail.org

                  @WALFTEAM The real reason was that old gcc generated really bad assembly and that mach (the kernel) was incredibly slow. Even if the UI wasn't a GPU hog, it would still run slow because the core was slow and compiled by a horrible compiler. Which is why Apple poured quite a lot of money into gcc development.

                    @bonkmaykr @sendpaws @maid @mangeurdenuage @dps910 @newt A lot of stuff in the UNIX Haters book is like that. Valid criticisms misplaced. Nightmare File System is completely correct though.

                      @phnt @bonkmaykr @maid @mangeurdenuage @dps910 @newt a lot of it was because of how jank 80s/90s unix actually is in the real world, and some of the shit hasn't changed.
