The words "You don't get to own Program" should never, ever, ever be uttered by an organization supposedly dedicated to Free Software.

This is yet another gigantic mask-off moment for Red Hat Inc. and the GNOME foundation, it should be a wakeup call to every computer user and yet the corporate shot heard 'round the world is yet again ignored.

Please spread this. FreeDesktop wants you and the tools you rely on for your day-to-day zombified and then dead.

@bonkmaykr this was never a secret. It was obvious to everyone. "No one's contributing!". Obviously gatekept. A hostile fork was inevitable. Eventually someone is going to hack in HDR or something, because they *need* it. What will the foundation do then? Probably not merge.

I asked about their HDR support and got nothing back. Fuck maybe some of us old game devs should offer to help them finish it up if that's the issue. Wayland didn't even consider basic user needs, and was conceived as a toy project by all accounts. With HDR support an Xorg fork could kill off wayland.

"It's OK when we're fascists" folks always be this way. They want to force people down their railroad tracks and ban cars and planes. They've been like this for years.

@bonkmaykr Really respectful of those that came before, and of how Xorg (And X from where it was forked) powered countless WMs for decades :apuhammer: (Sarcasm if it's not obvious)

i agree, but then gnome and red hat never ever cared about free software.

i also wish there were more people who cared about this issue that werent rightwing pieces of shit. its a shame that the MAIN choices are corporate shills and fascists.

theres a third option but i wont waste your time, or more of my own trying to say so. open source baits with freedom and switches you to monopolies. libertarians bait with freedom and switch you to laws against science, public libraries and immigration. both can go straight to hell- no more scams. no more bullshit. fuck all of this.

@idiot@shitposter.world @bonkmaykr@canithesis.org You have to understand that Xorg was only maintained due to sponsorship of some corporations that sell Linux support services, like RedHat.

They decided to not care, and thus it's dead.

To keep it running somebody would have to test it on all kinds of hardware, diagnose the bugs, and fix them. That's not happening. Especially on Arm hardware which exposes too much detail of the GPU pipeline to the OS it's broken a lot of the time. This is because Xorg was designed for something like Indy, and there is significant impedance mismatch between the Xorg's model of what GPU is and today's reality.

All that said the GNOME team that RedHat sponsors made sure that Wayland is way more broken than it has to be.

Behind every other missing feature or broken implementation of something in Wayland there is a GNOME developer on RedHat's payroll :ablobcatcry:

@mitchconner @bonkmaykr XFree86 also died because they kicked out Keith from the board, now the Xorg foundation kicked the last active contributor. Everybody that was keeping at least some attention saw this from a mile away.

Still works better than Wayland on all my machines. The bar for shippable software has gone down considerably it seems.

@bonkmaykr These people think that even Wayland users like me who see some benefits in the design of their protocol will surely follow and listen what these people have to say, or at very least the way of how they behave like smells like that.

I'm sorry, but when you're trying to deliberately block the development of x11 and ban user from freedesktop for having a courage to create a fork, then don't be surprised your approach for promoting free/libre software will be questioned.
